Creative Problem Solvers

Montessori children are natural and confident problem solvers. They are resourceful, and can come up with imaginative solutions that adults might not think of. Rather than try and mold the child to our adult way of thinking, we believe that he can arrive at informed decisions by using his own innate reasoning skills. As Maria Montessori said, “Leave the child free to make use of his powers and he will show himself capable of success.”

A resilient child looks at mistakes and disappointments as opportunities to learn, rather than setbacks, and as a result, he approaches life with enthusiasm and confidence. History of WSMS-TEP

The Central Harlem Association of Montessori Parents (CHAMP), Inc. was organized as a series of workshops in 1967 to enable parents to become partners in their children’s education.  It soon became evident that more than workshops were needed.  Thus, under the direction of Roslyn D. Williams, Project CHAMP was developed to prepare parents to become Montessori teachers and to increase the pool of credentialed Montessori teachers in New York City.

The additional goal of creating a career alder for parents by earning college credits for the Montessori coursework as soon met.  Classes were held on weekends, often in the school of the instructor.

In 1995 CHAMP-MTEP moved to West Side Montessori School and, to meet New York State requirements, changed its name to West Side Montessori School’s Teacher Education Program (WSMS-TEP).

WSMS-TEP continues to be well known for the diverse range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds of its students, and for its uniquely qualified faculty. Standards are set high.  We believe children deserve the best.
